Bee'n Queen'd Apiaries is committed to supporting not just our own honey bees, but native pollinators! We are doing that by rehabilitating sections of land once, but no longer, used for crops or pasture into native pollinator habitat.
"...wild bees declined 23% across the US between 2008 and 2013.... (as a) result of conversion of natural habitats to row crops..."
- Dr. Ramaswamy, INFA, 2016.
This is where our focus and true meaning of environmental stewardship in our mission statement stemmed from. Highlighting the importance of preserving and increasing native pollinator land is key to the survival of native bees and other native pollinator species such as moths, wasps & butterflies.
While we do not expect farmers to stop producing food, we do believe in attempting to preserve what lands we have, and rehabbing lands which aren't necessary for crop production.
The biggest threat to Honey Bees currently aside from their own exposure to pesticides is Varroa Destructor, a mite which sucks the fat bodies from the bees, weakening them and transmitting diseases while it does. Varroa have officially been spread world wide without the possibility of elimination at this time.
Maintenance treatments currently are through mechanical or chemical means. Most mechanical means only give minor relief. However, chemical means have become the most popular and successful approach, but at great cost.
Varroa have become resistant to many of the chemicals, most of which are synthetic, that have been introduced to kill or suppress mite numbers. As they develop resistance, stronger chemicals have been introduced over time putting bees, honey, wax and the people who consume them at risk of elevated exposure. This is why we have chosen to utilize OAV, an organic method which currently is the only known successful treatment that doesn't create resistance.
One of the many ways we are trying to help contribute to a better future is utilizing green energy. Our building is outfitted with solar power, nearly eliminating our dependence on the grid during the day. Our battery backup provides us with energy at night and any excess energy is returned to the grid to provide clean energy for others.
The world has begun to recognize the impact of plastics, synthetic fabrics, & non-recyclable coated paper waste. The alternative use of natural, biodegradable & recyclable products without charging extra premiums is the best way to prevent microplastics and contributing to the landfill.
This is why Bee'n Queen'd Apiaries has made it one of our missions to lead the way by offering environmentally friendly, reusable and recyclable products & packaging. This includes 100% recyclable shopping bags as well as reusable & recyclable glass containers. While we still offer plastic alternatives for those who prefer it, we encourage our customers to consider our superior glass products offered at the same price as their plastic counterparts.
